WORKSHOPS
DATA SHAPE CYANOTYPES (in collaboration with Susan Reiser)
is a hands-on workshop, available as a drop-in or through advanced registration, that merges art and science. Using site-specific data relevant to the workshop’s location, participants will generate unique shapes that are combined with local flora, fauna, or found objects to create data-driven compositions. Cyanotype, one of the oldest photographic processes, was invented by Sir John Herschel in the 1840s. These iconic blue prints are made by coating paper with an iron salt solution that reacts to UV light. When exposed, the areas not covered by the data shapes or objects darken, leaving behind distinct impressions after rinsing. "Cyan" comes from the Greek word for "dark-blue impression." Anna Atkins, the first to publish a book using this process, created Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions (1843), blending art and science in an engaging and resonate way.
